Improved energy output levels from small-scale Microbial Fuel Cells.
This study reports on the findings from the investigation into small-scale (6.25 mL) MFCs, connected together as a network of multiple units. The MFCs contained unmodified (no catalyst) carbon fibre electrodes and for initial and later experiments, a standard ion-exchange membrane for the proton transfer from the anode to the cathode. The anode microbial culture was of the type commonly found i...
متن کاملMicrobial fuel cells: novel biotechnology for energy generation.
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide new opportunities for the sustainable production of energy from biodegradable, reduced compounds. MFCs function on different carbohydrates but also on complex substrates present in wastewaters. As yet there is limited information available about the energy metabolism and nature of the bacteria using the anode as electron acceptor; few electron transfer mechan...
متن کاملUrine utilisation by microbial fuel cells; energy fuel for the future.
This communication reports for the first time the direct utilisation of urine in MFCs for the production of electricity. Different conversion efficiencies were recorded, depending on the amount treated. Elements such as N, P, K can be locked into new biomass, thus removed from solution, resulting in recycling without environmental pollution.
متن کاملMicrobial community optimization for electricity generation in Microbial Fuel Cells
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a type of fuel cells that use bacteria as biocatalyst to oxidize an organic substrate to release electrons, which can be harvested in an external circuit to produce electric energy. This technology hold the potential to help overcome energetic problems and at the same time treat waste water more efficiently than the current employed techniques. Despite all this p...
